Day 81 - Carlsbad, NM to Artesia, NM

It was an interesting morning. We woke to the noise of traffic. Having slept poorly all night, as a result of the loud noises and bright lights, we were both reluctant to climb out of our eroding bags. Unfortunately, we were camping at a popular fishing spot so we had to vacate the area before people started to pile into our camping spot.

It was a little cold in the morning, but pretty.

We made our way to a breakfast buffet and past a water flume - the first of which either of us have ever seen.

After getting a shower at a local fire station and spending too many hours at a library, we decided to check out the town and found a small cafe where we could get some coffee.

We decided (and were told by many of the residents) that should not stay in Carlsbad any longer than we needed too. It was time to leave.

Unfortunately, the wind was not in our favor. In fact it was really awful riding weather - especially because it was getting dark.

We crossed he street to a Wendy's for a quick dinner, put on our bike clothes and put our tires to the pavement.

As we rode into the sunset, we were greeted by a host of awful smells - natural gas, cow poop and some more scents that have me the impression that I was losing countless years of my life just by sniffing to toxins.

Here is the flame froma natural gas leak.

Not too far from Artesia, Brian stopped me because he had a flat tire. We took a look and found the culprit with relative ease. Note the gigantic staple poking through the sidewall. This, along with the rushing wind, certainly dampened our spirits.

We ended up cutting our ride short, at about 8:30, when we reached Artesia. We found an IHOP and had some dinner. We then pressed ourselves back onto the road to find a nice quiet place to set up our camp. Salvation appeared in the form of a park behind a hospital. It was a wonderful night's sleep.

Total mileage: 40
