It was a very interesting day today. We saw a lot of colors on the trees, something I didn't expect in New Mexico. AS I crawled out of our tent in the morning and looked up, I was greeted by these three trees looming above me.
The road to Ruidoso was nice enough. There were no major hills - just one long gradual ascent which took us up to 7,000 feet or something like that.
There's a lot of nothing out here.
Except for the fall foliage in the valleys.
It was beautiful.
I never expected there to be so much color in New Mexico!
I wasn't even sure that I was still in New Mexico!
I was really enjoying the ride. Between the colors and the nice road, I couldn't have asked for more.
This picture basically sums up the ride. Absolutely beautiful.
I even found one of these old Land Rovers. Not a common vehicle!
And another classic to add the the number of cars that are just laying around out here.
We stopped just before reaching town at this "fruit stand." We split a half gallon of cherry cider, because the guy there recommended it to us. What a mistake that was. The stuff did not taste great.
As we rolled into town, feeling sick from the cider, we stopped at a police station to see if they could recommend a place for us to set up camp. They directed us to make our camp near a parking lot by a race track and casino. That didn't seem like a great idea so we found a spot within a small park near the road. It was perfect: quiet and dark. Before bed, we stopped off at an authentic Mexican restaurant and enjoyed a real burrito.
We stopped one last time in a grocery store in Roswell before leaving. It was two days after Halloween and they already had Christmas decorations up.
