Day 71 - Sanderson, TX to Marathon, TX

The stretch of road today would wind us through 55 miles of nothingness, so we took our time getting onto our bikes. We first stopped at the local grocery store, which was a small shack with food in it purchased from and Walmart and marked up to offset the cost of the owner's gas expenditures. The woman who owned the shop was extremely nice and helped us out a lot.

Soon we were off and rolling through the unforgiving roads of Texas.

There wasn't much to look at along the way.

I did find some gourds, however. I was pretty excited about that.

Uni-boob mountain?

Here are some mountains, at last.

Though there wasn't much to look at, it was a beautiful day!

Unfortunately for us, we were facing a very strong headwind almost the entire ride.

It was struggle city out here.

At some point during the day, we stopped near the entrance to a driveway to have lunch. We set up in the driveway entrance to get out of the way of traffic. While we were making our PB & J sandwiches, we yelled at by the owner of the house whose driveway entrance we were perched in. Finally, we met an unfriendly person in Texas.

The wind must have picked up because we were both pedaling way too hard for the speed that we were going. This was turning out to be the hardest easy day yet.

Marathon was only a short distance away. I had the Eagles Greatest Hits album on repeat all day and was nearly through the second repeat of the album. Once in Marathon, we stopped at a gas station and get some much needed fluids in our systems. We were exhausted.

Finding the hostel that we were staying at was trickier than I had expected it to be. The cell service was very poor when I was talking to the person who runs it and was unable to hear some keys directions. We wandered around town and luckily knocked on the right door to find a friendly Texan who was glad to give us some directions.

After meeting Mike - I guess you would call him the manager of the hostel, we got showered, changed and biked back into town to explore the main drag. There was not much open at all. Everything seemed to close in the afternoon.

We had a local beer at a very expensive restaurant and decided to cook ourselves up some mac and cheese back at the hostel. We picked up cottage cheese at the market to make the mac even cheesier.

While Brian slaved away at the stove, I got a handsome fire rolling.

It was a beautiful evening and I took full advantage of the bed outside on the porch that night. As soon as the local dogs quit their barking, I was fast asleep underneath the stars.

Total mileage: 55
